Then we get into a little bit of a problem, because when I start talking about the identification of an enemy that thinks, and that is able to train us in thinking and acting like it, the first thing I hear in rebuttal from certain spiritual leaders, is, “He’s into sin consciousness.”
It’s not sin consciousness; it’s discernment. In that statement about sin consciousness, many men say it as if it were generic. We’re told not to be ignorant of Satan’s devices.
11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
2 Corinthians 2:11 KJV
We’re told in the New Testament that the discerning of spirits is one of the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit.
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
1 Corinthians 12:10 KJV
I’m sure we know that our enemy didn’t pass away 2000 years ago. You know in the last program we talked about Hebrews 5:14 — a sign of maturing is that by reason of exercising our senses, we’re able to discern both good and evil.
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Hebrews 5:14 KJV
It’s amazing to me as a pastor to watch people buy so much toothpaste in trying to destroy the organisms that give bad breath, but they won’t destroy the organisms that are killing them with disease, called sin. Paul very clearly in 2 Corinthians 7:1 says — Having therefore these promises dearly beloved let us cleanse ourselves therefore from all filthiness of the flesh and the spirit.
1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
2 Corinthians 7:1 KJV
A man who has no rule over his own spirit is like a city with its walls broken down.
28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
Proverbs 25:28 KJV
In Ezekiel chapter 18, Adonay says that we’re to make ourselves a new heart and a new spirit, for why should we die?
31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
Ezekiel 18:31 KJV
So then Adonay said therefore repent and turn yourselves from these iniquities so they won’t be your ruin. So turn yourselves that you may live.
32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.
Ezekiel 18:32 KJV
If you want to be healed of high blood pressure, repent of serving that sin of fear. I don’t have high blood pressure because I don’t serve the sin of taking thought for tomorrow.
When little worries come like what can go wrong tomorrow, I recognize that the source of that thought is not me. So I’m able to hold that thought in captivity. I’m able to cast it down as an evil imagination which is trying to exalt itself against the knowledge of God. That’s 2 Corinthians 2:5.
5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
2 Corinthians 10:5 KJV
What’s the knowledge of God? Take no thought for tomorrow!
Here are practical applications of truth that allow us to maintain our lives free from the enemy, but people don’t realize that God intends us to do a lot of things about our life.
It says very clearly in Romans — For those that are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Romans 8:14 KJV
