The word “blessing” means a benefit from God. Let’s look at the word “curse”. This became an interesting word study for me, and a frustrating one, because when I looked up the word “curse” in the Strong’s concordance (H7045 from H7043), it said vilification.
What does vilification mean? I went to the root word of the Hebrew word for curse in Deuteronomy 28, and the root word definition was also vilification. Well, I’m no further ahead in the second level so I went down to the next root of the root and learned something. The word “curse” means the abatement (H7043) or lessoning of the blessing. Abatement.
The word “curse” means in the Hebrew the vilification of the blessing. Abatement means that something comes to diminish what is best for us. So disease is a lessening or an abatement of heaven. Depression is a lessoning or a vilification of what the peace of our mind would be. When you look at Deuteronomy 28:15 to the end of the chapter, it says if you hear what God said, but you refuse to be a doer of the Word, all these curses will … Literally it says — All these abatements, all these vilifications of the blessing, shall come or lessoning and so on.
15 But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:
Deuteronomy 28:15 KJV
Literally when we’re a doer of the Word… (Hang onto your seatbelt because this is a four by four again.) When we’re a doer of the Word, then God honors His Word and gives us a benefit.
1 And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: 2 And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God.
Deuteronomy 28:1-2 KJV
When we’re disobedient to God’s Word, we’re following another word which is not God’s Word. There is a “blessing” (from Satan), but Satan’s blessing is the curse. So you have two blessings, one from God and one from Satan and his kingdom.
Each blessing from either kingdom is conditional to the word that you believe and follow, so if I follow forgiveness which is how God thinks, I have all the benefits that heaven has to offer for practicing forgiveness in my life. If I serve and practice unforgiveness and resentment, then there is a “blessing” coming to me there, but it’s not from God. It’s a vilification of the blessing and brings the curse, which is Satan’s blessing.
Blessings and curses are really easy to understand because we’re either having a total benefit from God, which He wants for us, or something has lessoned that, diminished it and changed it, which is the opposite of blessing. A curse is a disease, which is the opposite of health, and a disease is the vilification of health.
It’s as simple as that. That’s why it is a curse.
Do you know any Christians who have unforgiveness in their lives? Do you think there’s a consequence to practicing unforgiveness? The consequence to practicing unforgiveness is the same to the believer as it is the unbeliever. Ezekiel 18 is a powerful chapter in the Bible about God’s people, Old Testament yes, but they’re covenant people. The Old Testament righteous were sinning, and they were plagued. They would not repent. The unrighteous in that time were repenting to God, and He was blessing them. God’s people in Ezekiel 18 were really upset. They began to accuse God and said — You’re not fair, God.
25 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, 0 house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?
Ezekiel 18:25 KJV
We’re your covenant people. You should be killing these unrighteous people, not forgiving them and healing them. We ought to be able to serve sin as your people, and you are supposed to love us and bless us anyway. You’re not fair. That makes us just like a bunch of kids. Why are you punishing me? And we don’t understand that punishment is not from God. When we decide to follow another law, God lets us. He withdraws and lets you follow whatever law you want. The law also has a fruit.
If we sow unto the flesh, we shall reap the things of the flesh. If we sow unto the Spirit we shall reap the things of the Spirit. So here in the New Testament church age, we have the same diseases as the unsaved. We’re in the same doctors’ offices. We’re going to the same funeral homes, dying of the same diseases. We have the same soul problems of depression and anxiety disorders that the world has, and we commit the same sins. Yet we act like we’re not the same as the world.
So if you have a disease, stop acting like you’re well. The blessings of God are our promises, but they’re conditional. When you look at the scriptures, the blessings of God are conditional to obedience. It has never changed.
There is one missing link to this thing and that is — God will have mercy on whom He shall have mercy.
15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
Romans 9:15 KJV
See also Exodus 33:19 and Romans 9:18.
I have seen God heal and deliver some really sinful, goofy Christians, usually to make the rest of us mad as a wet hen. We know our brother is unrighteous, but not us. So God will have mercy, even if there’s a sin issue, even if there’s a spiritual root to disease. But when I minister to people and God doesn’t heal them, I know it’s time to go to work to find out why Satan and his kingdom have a legal right to their life. We quoted the scripture in 2 Timothy 2:24-26 that proves that. So I just wanted to cover the blessings and cursings because in Christianity we’re acting like we don’t have the “blank”. Because we can’t use the word “curse”, I’m going to use a synonym and call it diabetes I or hemorrhoids or cancer or lupus or Crohn’s disease, because I’m not allowed to use what the Bible calls it. In Deuteronomy 28, the definition of curse is a whole chapter right down to anxiety disorders and insanity. Every disease that is listed, we have today from itching and scratching, to psoriasis, to allergies, to compromised immune systems, to cancer to diabetes. In Deuteronomy 28 all diseases of the body and the soul are defined right down to losing your house to foreclosure, divorce, losing your farm to foreclosure, phobias and panic attacks are all listed in Deuteronomy 28 as the opposite of a blessing. The beauty of the cross is that now we can be free, but no one is teaching appropriation through obedience. That’s not legalism; that’s the gospel. Be a doer of the Word. That’s exactly what Jesus said. That means we love God.
23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
James 1:23 KJV
