What is the definition of the word “if” and its meaning?

(Henry Wright) I want to do a little word study with you from “a blessing if you obey”. Let’s do a word study on the word “if. Very few people have looked up the word “if” and done a word study. We consider it to be an insignificant word, but the Bible says not one jot or tittle shall pass from the law until all is fulfilled.

18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Matthew 5:18 KJV

We have removed the jots and tittles, and “if is one of those jots and tittles. In fact the new Strong’s concordance doesn’t even list “if anymore. The word “if” in verse 27 is a different Hebrew word than the word “if” in verse 28 and both have a different meaning. The word “if” in verse 27 is the Hebrew word asher (not the tribe Asher). It’s another Hebrew word asher which is H834 in the Strong’s concordance. In verse 28 “if” is the Hebrew word im which is H518 in the Strong’s concordance. So I want to translate it like this: Behold I set before you this day a blessing and a curse. The blessing if you obey what God has said, if you become a doer of the Word, then the blessings will come upon you, and they shall come upon you very quickly. The word asher means “very quickly”. If you do not obey God’s Word, then the curse comes. The word im indicates in the text that if you will not be a doer of the Word, if you will not obey the commandments of God, the curse does not come quickly, but it shall surely come. Here we see, built right into the language, God’s provision against our enemy to give us that ability to understand, apply the principles, recognize our participation with sin, repent and take responsibility. Here we see two powerful forces working against each other.

This is not a place to be afraid of. It’s a place of victory or it’s a place of bondage. We make our victories, and we make our bondages because we come into agreement with one principle or another, and practice it as a way of life.

(Donna Wright) What’s really neat about that is the blessings come immediately when you are obedient.

(Henry Wright) I’ve seen tumors disappear as fast as you can snap your finger.

(Donna Wright) If we aren’t obedient, then the curse will come, and it shall surely come. But God gives us this grace time and hopefully we can get it right with Him.
